In the 1860’s, Queen Victoria began hosting garden parties for fellow Royals, officials and nobility. But Queen Eiizabeth turned such affairs into something more equitable as an opportunity to thank the public for charitable work or other public services. In 1972, Ricky Nelson recorded the “Garden Party” song written by John Fogerty.
“I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends
A chance to share old memories and play our songs again
When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name
No one recognized me, I didn't look the same”
